Sandy Powell Western Photography | About

I am very fortunate to live in the Eastern Sierra which is one of the most spectacular places for photography. I am very passionate about photography and art. I don’t want my photos to just capture a moment in time, I want them to be expressive and tell a story. I started out in photography in the 80’s while working as a backcountry ranger and as a hotshot firefighter for the forest service. As a teen, I lived in the Northern Arizona mountains, back when it was mostly known as ranching and cowboy country. I traveled hundreds of miles of backroads on mountain bike or horseback. I am an adventurous person never content to sit on the sidelines, always wanting to explore new territories and meet new people.

My interests include: Western Life, Equine, Landscape, Portrait, Wildlife, and Infrared Photography. I have an engineering degree from Georgia Tech/Cal Poly and also have a minor in art. My photography and art work has been featured in Western Horseman magazine, Range magazine, Bishop Mule Days magazine, Cowboys & Indians magazine, Western Mule magazine, Mules and More magazine, Sagebrush Rider magazine, Alaska Magazine, Nevada magazine,  Business Insider, Cal Poly Library,  Cat Fancy magazine, Dog Fancy magazine, San Jose Mercury News, and Sedona Red Rock News. I was trained as a film photographer for 20+ years and then got into digital photography  years ago.
